role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall objective of the<strong> LIFE RECLOAK <\/strong>project is to achieve reforestation of areas affected by holm oak decline and mortality, thus improving natural regeneration and ecosystem functioning in habitat 9340 \u201c<em>Quercus ilex<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Quercus rotundifolia<\/em>\u00a0forest\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Mediterranean holm oak forests constitute a complex, adaptive and resilient biological system, project activities are designed to strengthen biodiversity, improve the ability to adapt to environmental stresses and promote the long-term conservation of these ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The specific objectives of the project are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restore holm oak forests in four pilot sites in Italy, Spain, and Malta<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use native seedlings that are resistant to drought and disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor the growth, biodiversity, and climate benefits of the new forests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select biological indicators to assess the health and resilience of holm oak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disseminate the results and promote their application in other Mediterranean areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Involve institutions, experts, and local communities in sustainable forest management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The LIFE RECLOAK project aims also to improve the resilience and ecological functionality of Mediterranean holm oak forests through concrete and&nbsp;<strong><u>measurable results<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Forest restoration<\/strong><br>Up to a 25% increase in holm oak survival within 5 years and a 10\u201330% increase in vegetation cover in the long term thanks to selected genotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Carbon sequestration<\/strong><br>Increase in CO\u2082 absorption of +20\u201340% within 3 years and up to +60% over 10 years, compared to areas in decline.<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ipsp.cnr.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Life-Recloak.jpg\"><br><strong>Soil quality<\/strong><br>20% reduction in erosion, increase in organic matter (+20%) and water capacity (+15%), improving soil fertility and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biodiversity<\/strong><br>Recovery of habitats and species of conservation value and increased soil biodiversity, with more mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monitoring and indicators<\/strong><br>Development of monitoring models to assess climate change effects on carbon sequestration and water storage in Mediterranean forests and definition of new biological indicators to measure forest health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scientific and technical tools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Report on holm oak genotypes that are potentially drought-tolerant and resistant to&nbsp;<em>Phytophthora cinnamomi<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimized protocols for:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the diagnosis and identification of resistant holm oaks;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the propagation of holm oak in nurseries and reforestation areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical manual with operating procedures and field activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific reports on:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ecophysiological measurements and seedling growth;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>soil meta-barcoding and phenotypic fingerprint of holm oak genotypes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>soil microbial biodiversity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon and water calculator to monitor holm oak plantations and estimate environmental benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Guidelines and operational documents<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LIFE RECLOAK operational manual, with practical instructions for applying the developed techniques.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidelines for the adoption of sustainable and resilient reforestation protocols.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Training and dissemination<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>6 workshops in Italy, Spain, and Malta to share the project\u2019s practices and results with policy makers and stakeholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 training courses for technicians and forest owners on the application of the new protocols.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Layman\u2019s Report, a summary of the main results achieved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Project video, to showcase the activities and impact of LIFE RECLOAK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Sustainability and continuity<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cAfter-LIFE Plan,\u201d the strategy to continue the actions and dissemination of results even after the end of the project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LIFE RECLOAK Business
